The Roots of Hoopdance :: Tony Duncan, Native American dancer

Tony Duncan won the 2011 World Hoopdance Championship in Arizona. He's also a flute player and tours with his band Estun-Bah and other family performers. Here the youngest member studies the master :)

Learning from the Master

Starting them Young

Original, Native hoopdance is like storytelling. Dancers create shapes with the hoops - animals, different nature elements, flowers, eagles - and move from one formation to another. I saw Native hoopdance once in upstate New York and it's really captivating to witness. Here's Tony Duncan's winning performance from last February:

There's a definitive spiritual aspect to Native hoopdance as the hoop represents connectedness and the circle of life. Black Elk (1863-1950), a Sioux holy man, said:
"You have noticed that everything an Indian does is in a circle, and that is because the Power of the World always works in circles, and everything tries to be round. The Sky is round, and I have heard that the earth is round like a ball, and so are all the stars. The wind, in its greatest power, whirls. Birds make their nest in circles, for theirs is the same religion as ours. Even the seasons form a great circle in their changing, and always come back again to where they were. The life of a man is a circle from childhood to childhood, and so it is in everything where power moves."

Hooping It Up Down in Tennessee

We've been in Tennessee for the past few days, hanging out at the university in Murfreesboro. I brought out my harmonium every day and just sat on the quad in front of the library and chanted, people came by, picked up magazines and books and signed up for the newsletter
.
I met tons of cool people here - including so many hoopers too! Today I'm going to their hoop club jam. We already hooped together yesterday and the day before and a bunch of students came by taking pictures. Here's a few that our hoopy paparazzi Kyle Kline took of moi :P

And yes, I totally burnt my skin yesterday. I was kind of hoping to get some color on it before I go to Finland in April so I can parade around like a real Americanized tanfaced Finglish speaking immigrant should. If only the color wasn't pink :D

Samuel Beckett says... (tiny hoop video)

The weather was so beautiful today, around 70 F (over 20 Celcius) and I took pictures of the first flowers I saw this spring. Then I spent many hours fighting with my hubby, what can you say, sometimes you just gotta yell. We washed the car and I expressed to him my desire to detach his head and put it in the water bucket. He just smiled, he was happy about my new-found "feistiness" as he calls it. Later he brought me cookies and total peace was established. Like two little flowers.

This is from my last hooping session in the warehouse where we stayed for the past month, a little thought I think of often. Balarama (our vehicle/home) got a heart transplant aka a new engine and we're back on the road now! Heading to Chapel Hill/Raleigh area in North Carolina, hopefully I'll find some hoopers to jam with over the weekend or next week. (If YOU are in the area, leave a comment!)

Alright, happy weekend friends! Peace and love and light and sparkles and fairies and no heads in buckets :D
