A Brief Salute to our Predecessors

Sabine will have a proper post for you, later in the week, but I'd like to take a moment to appreciate those cosplayers who've gone before us. To that end, we salute the guy who made a C-3PO costume in 1977.

In the post-digital age, we've inherited endless resources and a rich, inclusive culture of geekery. We should never forget the trials and tribulations of those who built that culture, those who first thought it might be fun to dress up like fictional characters.

Thank you, early cosplayers. Thank you.

Straight Edge Star Wars Krishna Geekery at Its Weirdest

At raves, parties, festivals and parks people sometimes come up to me and ask if I can sell them drugs. I agree, I usually dance/dress like a tripped out freak maniac and understand how people would think it's drug-induced. (I explained how I feel about drugs here.) So for a long time now I wanted a shirt that says "I don't do drugs nor do I sell them". Just to reduce hassles and to make a point.

So I looked online at some straight edge shirts (straight edge means no intoxication, no promiscuity, and often involves vegetarianism/veganism) and saw some I liked. My sis Kaisu was in the room and said she could make me one just like that (she studies textile arts). Right on! We ended up making our own design.

The whole thing was quite improvised, we made another design on the spot.

Unusual Holidays as Usual

Last Christmas we parked our van-house at the Staples (an office equipment store) parking lot, surfed their free wifi, watched Esoteric Agenda online and ate chips. That's all I remember. This year will be no exception. I have made grand plans for parking at a Wal-mart parking lot near Baltimore (since they welcome people to camp out in their parking lots). We will eat veggie pizza and watch Star Wars (since I've never seen any of them so might as well).

No, this post is NOT an advertisement for Wal-mart. Yet here's a little video Philip shot of me goofing around the store's lighted Christmas trees.
