Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII: Genesis Rhapsodos

A 1st-class SOLDIER who rebelled against Shinra, Genesis Rhapsodos went AWOL hoping to find a cure for his illness, degradation. He is an end result of Project G, an experiment involving a woman named Gillian was injected with Jenova cells before her cells were harvested and injected into Genesis when he was still a fetus. Genesis is considered a traitor to Shinra, but he is a close friend of Angeal Hewly’s as well as Sephiroth’s.

Although the contrast is pretty high on this photo, I liked the sinister effect that it gives to the cosplayer. Thanks again to Julia for sending this in!

Distant Worlds Concert

I spent the past few days visiting a friend in Boston, and the fact that Distant Worlds, a concert comprised solely of Final Fantasy music, was playing at the Boston Symphony Hall was actually the catalyst for the impromptu vacation.

If you are a fan of video game music and Nobuo Uematsu in particular, I urge you to attend at least one of these concerts. The Video Game Orchestra was absolutely fabulous, as was the conductor, Arnie Roth. I'm not too proud to admit that I started crying during the Opening - Bombing Mission song from Final Fantasy VII. And again during the Opera "Maria and Draco" (Aria di Mezzo Caraterre) from FF VI. The waves of nostalgia were overwhelming. I was also not prepared for how amazing Dancing Mad would sound on a massive pipe organ, and the clips of Terra fighting Kefka from Dissidia Final Fantasy playing in the background only made it that much more fantastic (and made me really wish I had a PSP).

Kefka, you singularly crazy bastard.

There is something to be said for live music - recordings just cannot compare. I have to say, the screen behind the orchestra playing clips from the games added to the performance - and not just because some of them were almost like inside jokes for the audience. Remember that obnoxious tapping noise when your characters walked around in Final Fantasy VIII? Yeah. Now imagine hearing that in a concert hall. And, of course, what Final Fantasy concert is complete without a rousing chorus of One Winged Angel a la Final Fantasy VII?

Man, I wish my seats had been that good. Note to self: order tickets many months in advance.

I do have one complaint, however...Why only one song from FF IX?!

What is the relevance to this blog, you wonder? Well. It came as no surprise to me that there were a handful of cosplayers scattered among the audience. My tally was as follows: Aeris - 2 ; Squall - 1 ; Generic red mage - 1 ; Moogle - 2

Now out of a crowd of over 2,000 that might not seem significant, but keep in mind that this is a formal concert situation. However, I noticed a wide range of outfits- from people in jeans and hoodies to people in their finest formal wear. Most orchestral concerts I have attended were in Europe, and I can't tell if people in the US don't dress as formally for concerts or whether this was a result of it being a video game orchestra rather than a more traditional concert.

Now pretend this is a dude in a hoodie with ears.

So I pose a question to all of you - is it appropriate to cosplay at a formal concert? Even though this was a video game concert, should cosplaying be considered an appropriate, respectful homage to the composer and the series, or is it too outlandish or informal for an orchestral performance?

In other news, I apologize for my absence. Cosplay updates will start as soon as the MCAT has been vanquished. Less than two weeks. I am beyond terrified.

Final Fantasy X-2: Yuna 11

Designer Nomura Tetsuya’s initial basis for Yuna’s overall look was her hakama, but when he learned that the character was to perform a dance called the “sending”, he wanted to give her outfit something that would flow. This was his reason for using a furisode, a kimono bearing long sleeves.

FFX-2, however, showed a more carefree Yuna, and thus they changed her clothing along with Rikku’s and Paine’s to make them seem more active. In addition, Yuna’s singing performance was used to demonstrate the pop feel that X-2 incorporates.

Moena Riu makes a beautiful Yuna, and she has a green and a blue colored contact lens too! Thank you so much for sharing this with us! And we look forward to more of your cosplays soon!

Final Fantasy X-2: Yuna 10

The fan reaction to Final Fantasy X convinced the developers to create a continuing story with Final Fantasy X-2. Costume designer Tsukamoto Tetsu stated that the radical design changes for Yuna reflected a huge cultural change. Script writer Nojima Kazushige added that Yuna’s new outfit was a “natural reaction to the heavy stuff she wore in FFX”. Because Yuna, Rikku, and Paine lived in a more carefree world in X-2, the designers wanted them to be able to dress up, a feature which became key to the gameplay.

She’s such a cute Yuna! But I wonder, isn’t this Saya? I’m not entirely sure though, but thanks to Pika-chan for sending this in!

Final Fantasy X-2: Yuna and Rikku

Yuna journeyed through Spira in search of the truth behind a sphere containing a video of a man closely resembling Tidus held up in jail. Alongside the Gullwings group who always help people in need, Yuna discovered that the man from the sphere was not Tidus, but Shuyin, an unsent person who wished to destroy Spira as revenge for the death of his lover, Lenne. In the end, the Gullwings managed to stop Shuyin and, depending on the player’s development through the game, Yuna may or may not see Tidus once again.

Although we can’t see Fairytale Destruction’s and Ari XIII’s faces, there’s something very classy about this photo, wouldn’t you agree? Thanks again to Colleen for sending this in!

Outside of the Final Fantasy series, Tifa has appeared in many other games, including Ehrgeiz as an unlockable character and an optional boss. In Kingdom Hearts II, she appears in her Advent Children attire, searching for Cloud while fighting various Heartless along the way. In LittleBigPlanet 2, Tifa is featured as a downloadable character model. She has also appeared in the electronic board games Itadaki Street Special and Itadaki Street Portable.

Another stunning Tifa! And she looks Caucasian to me, which is a nice change. Thanks to Nell for sending this in!
