Soul Eater Photoshoot - Complete!

After a torturous wait of many moons (okay, it was barely a month), we have our completed Soul Eater photoshoot from Katsucon 18! Thanks so much to the wonderful Elysia of Fenyx Design, the pictures are fantastic!

Eruka perched atop Tadpole Jackson, who is looking rather well in this photograph, considering that at this point his face was falling off.

Eruka and Tadpole Jackson, a.k.a. the very best chair there ever was. Rest in Peace, Tadpole Jackson.

Dr. Stein turnin' the screw.

Stein, don't you know cigarettes are bad for you?

Medusa in what looks to be a sea of blood, how fitting. Oh good, my freaky backwards-bending elbow made an appearance.

Them's fightin' words! Stein and Medusa prepare for epic pose battle to end all pose battles.

Pretty sure this is Stein disemboweling Medusa. Either that or I am having a seizure.

Vogue poses, with Eruka looking decidedly fashionable, and Medusa looking oddly pensive for a manipulative psychopath.

Medusa choking Eruka, again. Now, now, Medusa, that's not a very nice way to treat your peons.

Our trio poses dramatically and hopes not to get stepped on by passers-by. Also, glasses lens flare ftw.

The rest of the album can be viewed HERE. Thanks again to Elysia of Fenyx Design and to the Gaylord National Convention Center (snrk) for having what is likely the most photogenic venue ever.

Soul Eater: Death the Kid 03

soul eater cosplay - death the kid 3Death the Kid's status as a Death God grants him formidable power, particularly the destructive Soul Resonance “Death Cannon”. Although he is not required to collect souls or attend the DWMA, he does so anyway to fulfill his personal desires. His most distinguishing feature is the set of three white streaks on the left side of his head known as the “Lines of Sanzu” which increases his godlike powers whenever they connect.

I’ve always found the way Death the Kid holds his guns to be very interesting. I don’t know about you guys, but my pinky fingers aren’t exactly strong enough to pull the trigger of a gun. Thanks to Sheila for sending this in!

Soul Eater: Crona 02

soul eater cosplay - crona 2Crona is extremely reclusive, expressing uncertainty when it comes to interacting with others as well as dealing with certain situations. When he was much younger, Crona’s blood was replaced with black blood from Ragnarok by Medusa as part of her experiments to create a kishin. The black blood can harden to protect Crona from damage and used as additional projectile weapons through external wounds, but it can cause insanity for brief periods.

A beautiful cosplay of the androgynous Crona! Though it confuses me whether his hair is really pink or purple. Thanks again to Aerie for sending this in!

Styling the Dr.Stein wig

Now that we have Katsucon behind us and ready to move on to the cosplay for AZ, I finally forced Stuart to send me the durpy pictures I took of him when I was styling his Dr.Stein wig. (Dr.Stein is a crazy teacher character from Soul Eater, in case you didn't know)  This is by no means a tutorial, for I have absolutely no experience in cutting hair.  However, this is a warning about wigs you get from ebay.

So we purchased a generic Dr.Stein wig from China on ebay.  The picture of the wig they provided looked like this:
It looks so nice in the picture: not very shiny, with nice feathered tips at the back.  The color is nice as well.  Wigs usually comes with long bangs so that the wearer can style it to his/her face.  Since the wig was only about $22, we jumped on the bandwagon of buying wigs from China.  Alas, that was perhaps not the best decision we have made in our life.  The wig that arrived looked rather shiny and thin...so thin that some layers of hair sewn on the wig already came off the moment Stuart tried it on.

And here comes in the Super Mimi that tries to save the day!  First of all, I had to make sure that all the threads on the wigs were intact and all the layers of hair were sewn on tightly.  I resew some of the layers that came undone.
This is what the wig looked like on Stuart before anything was done to it:
He looks like Kitaro from GeGeGe no Kitaro
Then I took out my mother's hair cutting scissors (what do you call those things?) and started to cut away all the unnecessary hair.
I obviously was very good at making this wig into an Ayanami Rei wig...This is what Stuart looked like after almost losing a piece of his ear.

Finally, I figured out that in order to cut layers into the wig, I had to brush vertically and cut vertically.  With the help of some hair gum, this is what the finally product looked like:
Not too bad right???? hahaha!!!

Until Next Time~

Costume breakdown: Eruka Frog dress

This is where I reveal my secrets to how I constructed my Eruka costume.  The hardest part to this not so complicated costume is the dress, it is almost impossible to find giant polka dot printed fabric without custom printing it yourself.  I have searched and searched online for a good idea, and finally came decided to combine some of the stuff I have seen in others' costumes.  The idea is to get a black dress and either sew, print, or paint some kind of big circles on it.  Searching for the black dress was a mess, nothing was quite short enough or flared out enough.  I finally found a dress on Yesstyle.com for about $15 (currently out of stock).
Taken from Yesstyle.com

Obviously the dress had sleeves, so I had to take the seems for the sleeves out and re-serge some edges.  This entire process took me about 2 hours.

Now, for the dots.  There were couple things I really didn't like about either sewing or painting the dots.  If I had to sew the dots on, I had to find fabric 1.) that does not fray 2.) was not too thick or too sheer.  Then there was also the problem of not being able to cut perfect circles out of fabric.  Painting the dots would have worked with some stencil, however, I still had the problem of cutting perfect circles and make the paint go on evenly.  Eventually, I decided to use this old technique (lol) I have used when I was printing cheap J-rock t-shirts.  T-shirt transfer sheets for dark fabric!!!  I got the stretchy ones because the dress itself was stretchy.  I also obtained a circle cutter from my local crafts store (This type of thing), since the transfer sheets had the consistency of paper, it was very easy to cut.  With my perfect circles, all I had to do was just to iron them on.  Voila!

To make the dress flare out more, I used gray fusible interfacing and stiffened the entire dress out to obtain it's shape.  I have seen others use petticoats, but since in the anime Eruka only has a dress that has one-layer, I wanted to stay true to the show.
one layer, and it is gray
I also added some gray lace at the bottom to mimic the pattern.

I bought my hat....>.> yes, I know I'm a loser for that, but it was so much easier to just buy the hat.
Result:

More pictures should be coming in about a month or so.  I think I will do another post in the future regarding tadpole Jackson and the mistakes I have made while making him......Q_Q

We have some more pictures of my Eruka costume now :D  Go to check it out HERE

Soul Eater Cosplay for Katsucon 18 part 1

We hired the amazing photographer Elysia from Fenyx Design to shoot our Soul Eater cosplay.  The photoshoot was super awesomely fun, but it will take a while for the photos to get processed.  Since we are very impatient people, we took some photos of our own to give you a glimpse of what we did for our Soul Eater cosplay.  (A sneakpeak for our photoshoo with Elysia is posted!)

Stuey as Dr.Stein

Kathryn as the evil Medusa

Stein X Medusa

Me as Eruka X Medusa

Eruka
The costumes were a lot of fun to make (at least for me).  I think I will make a future post about what I have done with the dress and props and the mistakes I have made making this costume.

Soul Eater: Soul Evans

soul eater cosplay - soul evans by gokulover3

A demon scythe, Soul Evans is Maka Albarn’s laid back, nonchalant partner who tries to maintain a “cool” attitude. He has a tendency of bickering with Maka over unimportant things, but is fiercely loyal; even willing to die for his friends’ safety. He owns a motorcycle, which he and Maka use as transportation.

The expression on Goku Lover’s face is absolutely priceless! I really love the addition of the umbrella too, even though it wasn’t really meant for this cosplay originally. Please view more of her cosplays in her Deviant Art account!

Soul Eater: Justin Law and Giriko

soul eater cosplay - justin law and girikoJustin Law and Giriko have quickly developed a strong rivalry with each other as they have very conflicting ideas. These feelings are further intensified by the fact that both have equal levels of power. As a result, their fights always conclude in a draw.

Although later circumstances have put them on the same side, it has done little to temper their issues.
Impressive! Good thing they stopped fighting long enough to take a photo together! Thanks again to Warren for sending this in!

Soul Eater's Blair Cosplay Gallery 1

I just pimped out the Soul Eater Cosplay Gallery in my DeviantArt, so might as well dedicate a post to it here, since this costume is pretty much retired.
