The first project for my 3D Design class at FIU was a self-portrait head sculpture with terracotta clay. Well here's how it turned out:

The clay is really heavy, and I don't think it's a good medium to add small details, after finishing the sculpture I noticed my face drawings getting better! It really helps to grasp 3 dimensional proportions and volume.
