A year full of costumes and conventions

The end of the year is closing in and nine costumes, few projects and four conventions later I can look back to 2011 surprised, astonished and bit puzzled too. I really enjoyed last year even if there were struggles and setbacks. One single thing I’m really pleased with is our character choices. It feels like during the past year we have found characters that we can pull it off well and balanced. We have also polished skills with props and construction techniques.

Our first huge cosplay project reached a milestone in February, when we got our Snowtrooper costumes ready for a photoshoot. Before Tampere Kuplii we constructed the backpacks and were ready to participate in our first cosplay competition as freshly recruited soldiers. At Tampere Kuplii we were selected to the group of ten candidates, who got through to the second stage of the competition, which was an open voting on a website of a local newspaper. In the final battle our troopers carried us to third place.

We continued with Star Wars theme with female characters. For our first Desucon we arrived as Luminara Unduli and Barriss Offee and spend the weekend hanging around and enjoying the seats at the main concert hall. I think we have never sat as much at any convention before.

The next costumes to build were supposed to be Ivy and Yoshimitsu, but instead I found myself complying with Yoki's wish to construct “something new” for Kawacon. That something new was femme gijinka Decepticons; Princess Megs and Lady Star. While at the convention we got recruited for the cosplay competition and won, for our amazement. With the bot ladies we had our first real photoshoot with a real, live photographer!

The big project was still ahead. After WCS preliminaries back in 2010 I stated to Yoki that next year we are going to compete. And we did so with Ivy and Yoshimitsu from Soul Calibur III. And came second! That was the crown for our sixth year we have cosplayed together.

But the year wasn’t all about successful costumes and fun conventions. Starting from spring, around the time we started to print the fabrics for our Jedi Knights, I felt like something was wrong with me. My condition developed so that July and August passed by in a haze of pain and drugs. Even if some days crafting costumes or even getting out of bed was almost impossible, I think that working gave me something else to think about, than continually worrying and doubting on my sick leave. I could say that cosplay became my lifeline for a period of time.

Only two weeks before Tracon and WCS preliminaries I got diagnosed with a chronic illness. A week before Tracon I started my medication and without it I think that I couldn’t have been able to step on the stage back in September. Coming second in WCS preliminaries was a huge thing for us. For me just being able to participate was really important.

This year cosplay gave me little more that new techniques and garments to fill the closet. For a short time I thought that I might have to drop the hobby, but now that my health has improved I couldn't think more opposite! I'm really proud of what we have accomplished this year and wait eagerly for the next year and new challenges.

What I wish for next year next to straight seams and sharp scissors is health and opportunities to connect with other enthusiastic costumers. Happy New Year!

Final Fantasy VII Advent Children: Cloud Strife 07

I've featured Kaname in his Cloud cosplay twice in Cosplay Holic already, but never have I featured him in a video… reading doujinshi?!

Messing around at Anime Expo 2009, Kaname reading doujinshi for a bunch of people.

I guess now people can’t deny that Cloud Kaname is real!

Happy New Year everyone! Thank you for all your patience and support for Cosplay Holic. I sincerely hope this will be another year of amazing cosplays and cosplayers!

My Last Post for the Year 2011

I’ll end this wonderful year bywriting a blog post. First off, my next cosplay: Gogo Yubari.

Black Mamba VS Gogo Yubari
Kill Bill Volume 1

The photo above is the scene I am going to portray (hopefully) this coming MCTV Movie Mania (To know more about the event, click here).
This is how I completed my cosplay. I will write a comprehensive tutorial in the future for those of you who wants to cosplay this character, too.

Cosplay in progress: Gogo Yubari
1st photo: Me wearing the completed costume. Recycled a blazer and white shirt from a previous cosplay. No tweaking needed! It has the color of Gogo's coat and buttons.
L-R: a) The raw materials for the mace. Styroball and 2 dog's leashes. I joined the leashes together and attached a short PVC pipe for the handle. The styroball melted when my dad spray-painted it. I'll get a new styroball soon. Lesson learned!
        b) The bow tie! I made it using my accessory-making skills. LOL. It was pretty easy since mom taught me how to do it years ago.
        c) The skirt! Used one meter of fabric. Mom made it!

I started early in preparing for the event since I know that I will be very busy this January. A huge wave of quizzes and requirements coming!

2011 - WHAT A WONDERFUL YEAR!
Cee's Cosplay 2011

I started cosplaying and blogging this year. Met wonderful otaku friends to share my interests with and got closer to my family. Plus, wonderful gifts this Christmas. I would like to thank God for all of these, my family, friends and to YOU! Thank you for being a part of my life.

Thank you for reading and HAPPY NEW YEAR 2012~!

Mulan: Fa Mulan

mulan cosplay - fa mulan by xmonk3yxLook at me
I will never pass for a perfect bride
Or a perfect daughter
Can it be
I'm not meant to play this part?

Now I see
That if I were truly to be myself I would break my family's heart…

When Fa Mulan heard about her elderly father, the only man in her family, Fa Zhou, being forced to join the military, she decided to disguise herself as a man and take his place. When Fa Zhou learned about this, he prayed to his family ancestors, who ordered their “Great Stone Dragon” to protect her. Little did they know that the Great Stone Dragon failed to awaken and that Mushu, a much smaller dragon, was the one who went forth to protect Mulan.

Please note that this is only a cropped version of xmonk3yx’s cosplay of Mulan. Be sure to check out the original in her Deviant Art account to see the whole image! Thanks again to Niena for sending this in!

OMG I'm Famous :: Effie's Heart

I was told I'm on the Effie's Heart blog, in this post. Oooh! I happen to love Effie's Heart. They describe their clothes as classic, radical, modern and practical. I'd add romantic and retroish too. My favorite Effie's Heart item is these sick lace bow ruffle princess capri pants I'm wearing here:

and here:

...and on a million other occasion. We're getting these pants at my work in pink in the spring. Yeahh.

Although I don't clearly understand what "the quick of the soul" refers to, I like this quote by Stella Blum:

"Fashion is so close in revealing a person's inner feelings and everybody seems to hate to lay claim to vanity so people tend to push it away. It's really too close to the quick of the soul."

Bakemonogatari: Hanekawa Tsubasa and Hachikuji Mayoi

bakemonogatari cosplay - hanekawa tsubasa and hachikuji mayoiTwo different characters that Araragi Koyomi encounters, Tsubasa is the main character of “Tsubasa Cat” while Mayoi is the main character of “Mayoi Snail”.

Tsubasa is Koyomi’s classmate and the class representative.  She was possessed by a bakeneko during Golden Week due to stress over her family. Although it was resolved with Oshino Shinobu’s help at the cost of her own memories, problems emerged right before the school festival because of a different form of stress.

Mayoi, on the other hand, is the ghost of a fifth-grade elementary school girl who was killed in a traffic accident when she was trying to reach her mother’s house. She can only be seen by people who do not wish to reach their destination.

That’s the same Mayoi from more than a year ago! Good thing I remembered her, otherwise, I would have added this to the Unknown Section again! Thanks again to Lorelei for sending this in!

 My article on this event

I am going to feature this event in the Otaku House blogs. So please pose in front of my camera.
I'll be going as someone who has an excuse to be a crazy-ass girl. Been waiting to act like that!
To those who want to register as a cospalyer or just as a con-goer, go to Chinz Variety Shoppe or the Mindanao Cable office.

So who are you going as, Cee?
I am going as... drumroll... GOGO YUBARI from Kill Bill!

Gogo Yubari of Kill Bill

So yeah, she's a crazy girl with a mace in a Japanese school uniform. I'll be making my own costume and weapon so wish me luck!

See you there!

Song :: Free Space :: Float Away

Yesterday at Eye's Gallery a girl saw my bindi and asked if we sold them. I was working with James and we both thought this girl was a total burst of sunshine and full of wonderful positive energy. When she left we all hugged, and James and I got her number so we can hang out <3

It was also the first day at work for Angel whom I got for Christmas from my friend Carole.

Angel had an eventful day and she handled it all very celestially. Though she was a bit upset that we don't have this bracelet in her size:

So today the girl I met in the store, Sandie, and me were supposed to hoop in a park together but it rained pretty much all day and we ended up having kirtana at my place :)

We had so much fun we figured we should be a band. The name we came up for our band in about seven seconds is...The Flowter Seastars. Because don't we just look like we're floating away, into blissful meditational spheres? And are we not sisters with princess mermaid fairysparkle tendencies -- Seastars! Hahah!

We made a song too, the main music is by James (his Tumblr), lyrics by me, and singing by...who other than... The Flowter Seastars?!! Of course the song is not finished yet, we gave it back to James who will add some magicalness to it with his touch. But here's where it's at right now:

Soul Calibur II: Amy Sorel

soul caliber ii cosplay - amy sorelOnce a poor orphan who lived on the streets of Rouen, Amy Sorel’s parents died of a plague known as the Black Death which spread across all of Europe during her time. Having no other family to turn to, she came across a man named Raphael Sorel, who was being chased by the local authorities. She hid Raphael from the soldiers, for she herself feared them as they ran her poverty-stricken town. Raphael felt that he needed to repay her for saving his life, and took her in to raise her as his own daughter.

That is one amazing cosplayer. Does anyone know who she might be? This was taken at Hanami 2011 in Ludwigshafen, Germany, and the photographer, Craoz, is looking for who this cosplayer is so that he can credit her as well. Thanks again to Niena for sending this in!

Yu Yu Hakusho: Botan

yu yu hakusho cosplay - botan by ritsuThe grim reaper or guide to the Underworld, Botan's task is to ferry souls of the deceased to face their final judgment. She also acted as Yusuke’s assistant and trainer when he started out his tenure as an underworld detective. She taught him how to use various detective tools, communicated messages from Koenma, and often guided him to different destinations pertaining his cases.

Cute cosplay by Ritsu (葎)! Her pose is too much like Botan that this just had to be featured! Thanks again to Mina for sending this!
