Dexfest :: Dubstep Festival :: Get Up and Be a Retard!

On the Prototype stage Drug Money entices his audience to stand up and dance and shouts to the microphone, "Get up and be a retard!"

Walking through the campgrounds you see folks chilling on their folding chairs snorting molly (MDMA) lines off their folding tables filled with beer cans and piles of previous night's used glow sticks. All bubbly and spun, people seem to have a good time nodding their heads, waving their hands like rap stars and in general dancing hiphop to the dubstep that's mostly played all weekend.

The fashions include lots of scantiness, neon colors, fishnets, dreadlocks, feathers in hair, painted boobies and big baseball caps with hand-crafted graffiti art on them. Girls' dance styles were, for the most part, very squiggly, sexy and stripper-like.

"I Don't Slip and Fall, I Trip and Roll"
Dexfest is a three day dubstep festival in Dandridge, Tennessee that went down for its third year last weekend. It was my first exposure to the American dubstep rave culture and man it's very different than the (European) psytrance scene I'm used to. Then again, some aspects of it remind me of the Finnish "spugedelic" factor - spuge [spoo-keh] is slang for a drunk. Generally this is when getting wasted is more important at a party than the music there.

Anyhow, on the last day I got into the music and danced until my feet hurt too much to continue. Dubstep is just so slow I figured it would surely be easier music to dance to if I was sedated on ketamine (a cat tranquilizer) as some of the patrons there advertised.

Speaking of drug use advertisement, my camping neighbors from Knoxville sold t-shirts with various slogans such as Rave All Day, Jesus raves, Bass Your Face and I don't slip and fall, I trip and roll (indicating acid and ecstasy use). Ironically I did witness a substantial amount of slipping and falling around the festival grounds…

The local police were hip on the drugs and arrested a whole bunch of people. The police presence was really very prominent.

Musical Highlights
The Launchpad stage had many interesting lesser known acts. Cherub was a joyous duo of two guys playing guitars (or bass?! I was too busy dancing to notice) to their electronic tracks and singing entertaining and witty lyrics, more or less in falsetto. Kidsmeal was up next and he played a dj set, scratching vinyls and in this way adding trippy, unexpected sounds to the otherwise a bit dull (to my taste) dubstep. Futexture was another artist who put an inspiring twist to his music with a kind of polyrhythmic and psychedelic sound world.

Emancipator played a tranquil and ethereal set that was very beautiful but at the same time put me to sleep rather early on Friday night. Saturday night's Boombox was funkyliciously great and they actually played two extremely psytrancy tracks that got me jumping around the grassy main stage area like a madman.

Omwoods Cosmic Playground
I made a few friends at the festival, most heartwarmingly Miss HoopRage. She vended hoops, tie dye clothes, jewelry and other festive hippie items. Her 2,5 year-old son Logan was the cuteness personified as he ran around the grounds with his own tiny hula hoop.

I put up a booth as well and offered free hooping workshops and 1 on 1 hooping lessons all weekend. I had a lot of fun decorating my Omwoods Playground booth with all types of colorful blowup toys and lights that I groundscored from previous weekend's Bonnaroo festival.

It was a festival to remember, I definitely got my heavy dose of dancing that I was looking for and held several nice and well-attended hoop workshops/playshops. Many heartfelt thanks to Dex/Sean and friends for putting the festival together. Hopefully I'll be able to go next year too. I wasn't converted to dubstep but was sufficiently turned on to it not to be done with it yet. Actually while hooping today I was disappointed I didn't have much dub on my ipod. Friends, feel free to email me some!

Collage I Made of Things That I Love

I made this collage for the IHEART Project. Micaela from The Drifter and the Gypsy will make an e-book that contains a whole bunch more of these from people who signed up for her project. The topic was simple: IHEART - things that you love, or, heart.

So as you can see I tried to fit all types of aspects of my heartingfulness into this. You'll see a hooper chick, if you look closely. And of course, some compulsory fairy magic, a passage from the Bhagavad-gita, dance, meditation, Earth, and some pretty things, etc. Just click on it and you'll see it bigger.

Oh and yes, I heart YOU too :)

My beloved husband (who just happened to call me as I took this pic) dumpsterdived me 10 brand new lipsticks recently. So I've been experimenting today. I'm actually wearing skinny jeans, and a gray shirt I found somewhere, and that's it. In other words, I'm wearing normal clothes. It feels so strange. It feels like I'm wearing a costume. No fairyish nothing. Not even legwarmers of any kind. Just totally normal and boring and it's kind of exciting. I feel like an undercover. Not really sure undercover what though.

New Songs: Fairy Princess ASAP & Lonely

.
Lonely
.
I noticed suddenly that I'm a bit lonely sometimes because I live on the road and can never hang out with anyone for too long and this song Lonely came out of those feelings. I can't tell, I'm not that musical apparently, the harmonies may be kind of totally off kilter in the end but well it was just one take, and I'm lazy like that.
.
.Fairy Princess ASAP

.
What can I say, one too many vampire drama for me I guess.
.
Find lyrics for Lonely here, and lyrics for Fairy Princess ASAP here. Maybe I should be more embarrassed for sharing my weird, unpolished, unprofessional songs :) But it's so much fun making and singing them, why not share them too.

Samuel Beckett says... (tiny hoop video)

The weather was so beautiful today, around 70 F (over 20 Celcius) and I took pictures of the first flowers I saw this spring. Then I spent many hours fighting with my hubby, what can you say, sometimes you just gotta yell. We washed the car and I expressed to him my desire to detach his head and put it in the water bucket. He just smiled, he was happy about my new-found "feistiness" as he calls it. Later he brought me cookies and total peace was established. Like two little flowers.

This is from my last hooping session in the warehouse where we stayed for the past month, a little thought I think of often. Balarama (our vehicle/home) got a heart transplant aka a new engine and we're back on the road now! Heading to Chapel Hill/Raleigh area in North Carolina, hopefully I'll find some hoopers to jam with over the weekend or next week. (If YOU are in the area, leave a comment!)

Alright, happy weekend friends! Peace and love and light and sparkles and fairies and no heads in buckets :D

How to Make a Milkmaid Braid

.
I like this hairdo a lot! I did it yesterday and decided to take pics of the process. I had the camera on a chair most of the time and tried to fit myself into the picture, in whatever random light was there, so I'm sorry for any visual sloppiness. Hope you can figure out how to do this, it's really easy and takes just a few minutes. You need two hair ties and two or three pins.
.
1. Brush your hair and part it where you like.
.

2. Divide your hair somewhat in the middle in two bunches.

3. Pull all the hair on the right side over the left side bunch.

4. Braid the right side bunch.

5. It looks like this now:

6. Pull the left bunch of hair to the right side, over the right braid, and braid that too.

7. It will look like this, front and back:

8. Lift the right braid to the right side of your head and pin it down.

9. Do the same to the left braid. If needed you can add pins to catch any hair that pokes out and to hold the braids firmer into place.

10. Ta-dah!

11. And now dear Miss Milkmaid, to live up to your name you can pledge to love cows and not eat them :

Don't Let Me -- a little song I made!

I make music sometimes and I make it with heart but my songs are not really to be taken utterly seriously - because of little skill with the music making program and a lot of impatience in general, my music has a very authentic and obvious unpolished sound to it :) I thought I might just share it anyway since I so much enjoy making it. Let me know what you think!

Don't Let Me
.
I belong here
I belong here
your reasons are
your reasons

I hear your heart
I hear your heart
I don't speak
the language

I abandon you
I abandon you
the keys of my piano
abandon you

I belong here
I belong here
worn out shoes and
stupid dreams

I hear your heart
I hear your heart
it is pure and true
it is your typical

I was here
I was here
I throw my initials
in the wind

let me be
let me be
God how you can
really be let be

I belong here
I belong here
don't let me
don't let me

How to Take a Trip to Omwoods

Continuing the 30 Days posts on set topics.

Day 2 - Meaning behind your blog name
I used to post on some forums with the name Lovewoods like then years ago. When I started to do more stuff online again I had forgotten the passwords to all my Lovewoods accounts, and this is how Omwoods came to be. And I figured it describes me a bit more accurately.

Omwoods is a place too! Eyes closed, say om real slow a few times, with Attention. Open your eyes. Look around. You're in Omwoods. When you start drifting away from Omwoods, go back. Get lost. Make magic discoveries.

Day 3 - Your first love
Antti. I was 2, he was 7-ish. When me and my sisters were kids we would spend the day at a carekeeper's house like most Finnish kids do, and be picked up again after our parents got off work. Antti was the son of my nanny. I even named one of my top three precious baby toys Antti. He passed away when he was 15 or so, in a moped accident. I invited him to my 3-year birthday when I wore a fancy fluffy pink dress. I still have Antti, the doll.

Alright travelers, these pictures give you a beginning of a hint of what it looks like in Omwoods:

Happy omming!
